  • AIW for dinning and dashing because I didn't want to wait for the check?

    | 35F am a doctor who takes call at a level 2 trauma hospital. This means I just have to be readily available within 30min, so I don't have to stay inside the hospital if I'm not needed. I went to eat pho that was just a short 5 min drive away.
  • Half way through my meal, the OR charge called me to let me know they have an emergency case that was just posted. I wolfed down the remaining pho while trying to flag the waitress
  • down. After being unsuccessful twice, I left the card on the table as I finished eating. She still did not come, so I went to the front to pay. The person in front said
  • they will flag my server down (which is weird bc most pho places will let you pay upfront).
  • She came over and said she will "get to me" after sitting the next guest. But she sat them down and was waiting for their order, then started talking to another server while waiting for them to
  • look at their menu. I walked up to her and asked for the check because I have to go. She turned and stared at me... then said "you aren't special, you can sit back at your table, and I'll get
  • to you when I get to you" (mind you, I did not ask for anything during my stay - was NOT a demanding customer).
  • So I went to my table, wrote down my number with a short msg "text me to arrange payment" and left.
  • Manager called me later, I told her the event. She gave me the meal for free. Waitress later texted me saying I was a giant AH because the manager was deducting it from her wages.
  • FYI: - I think I spent about 10 min trying to pay - I'll def pay up front before eating next time

  • Connect Tackle299 I've waited on first responders and they had a trust with us. If an emergency called we already had their contact info. They come back to pay when they can. Never once have they failed us
  • andrewket2 NTA. Had you left without leaving contact info, then maybe both of you would be wrong. You did the right thing. Our emergency services and ER staff are grossly under appreciated.
  • EndHawkeyeErasure You actually are kinda more special as a lifesaver, and you did try to pay. So no, you aren't wrong. In the future, when you order, let your server know you will still want service (refills, checked up on) but a check asap
  • in case you have to leave in a hurry. You can just let them know youre on call and might have to rush. You dont need to respond to the server, you might let their manager know they reached out.
  • YES, it s ks that the server's pay was docked, they were also really re. They're at work. OP tried to pay and the server made that more difficult than necessary.
  • Deeri- NTA. You didn't dine and dash, you spent about 10 minutes actively trying to pay, left your card, went to the front, asked multiple times, and even left your phone number so they could contact you. The waitress's response was completely
  • unprofessional. If someone tells you they need to leave and are trying to pay, "you aren't special" is a wild thing to say. If the manager is actually deducting the cost from her wages, that's an issue between the waitress and the manager.
  • You didn't cause that. You made multiple good faith attempts to pay for your meal and were prevented from doing so.
  • GrooveBat Not wrong, but I am pretty sure it is illegal for the manager to deduct your meal from her pay.
